Named Community Ambassador for Aging
January 2020 - When I trained my first senior a few years ago, it awoken my passion for serving our senior population. I soon began volunteering at the Leesburg Senior Center in 2018 weekly on Thursdays [my favorite day of the week]. I even spent months learning how to better serve seniors as a personal trainer by getting trained as a functional aging specialist. I’ve had the privilege to speak to senior groups at churches, retirement communities and senior centers about health and the importance of movement for the aging body.
I am humbled to become a Community Ambassador on behalf of the Area Agency on Aging and to be a greater resource to our LoCo seniors and beyond. |
Unbelievable - Card in Local Monopoly Game
January 2020 - Never thought to aspire to be a part of the iconic board game - Monopoly, but when it happens, you acknowledge it. I am happy my historic role of Mrs. Leesburg (first ever) was captured as part of this game. I hope to be the winning card in many games to come in my community.
Celebrating the Lunar New Year - Washington DC
January 2020 - Crowds lined the streets surrounding the Chinatown neighborhood in Washington, D.C., to usher in the Year of the Rat at the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade on Sunday, January 26. The parade, which featured traditional lion dancers, firecrackers, beauty pageant winners and community groups, was once again organized by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, an umbrella group of Chinese American organizations.
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice which occurs sometime between January 21 and February 20. In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to a 12-year cycle. The Rat is the first in the 12-year-cycle of Chinese zodiac signs, suggesting that a Rat year is a year of renewal. People born in the year of the rat are generally born with the zodiac rat characteristics. They are believed to be very industrious and thrifty, diligent and positive, can deal carefully with money, and have good financial luck. You are a “Rat” if you were born in the year 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and of course 2020. |
A Trip Back Home to Washington VA
December 2019 - Had the privilege to go back home to Little Washington, Virginia for all the community ‘love’... It was truly emotional seeing (hearing) folks I had grown up with, my school age friends and family members that lined the streets and yell my name at the Christmas Parade. I could’ve never imagined this for myself. I am grateful for and humbled by the experience.
Mainstage Presentation at VA Women's Conference
|
December 2019 - Before 500+ attendees of the VA Women's Business Conference. I shared my story of surviving cancer and shepherding myself through weight loss for self preservation leading to a change in careers to become a personal trainer and gym owner - unimaginable. Shared how this farm girl left the country to create a better life. Shared how how I’d be profiled in the very magazines (Shape and Oxygen) that inspired me - unimaginable. And to have the privilege to speak to cancer survivors on behalf of the American Cancer Society and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - unimaginable. To have this farm girl go back home Little Washington, Virginia on Sunday as a @Mrs USA Queen 👑 - unimaginable. My take away: Have the guts to reinvent yourself over and over - that’s called evolving. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable cuz that where the growth is - growth you can bank on for living a fulfilling life. Ignore the naysayers, debbiedowners and haters. It’s YOUR life not theirs. Don’t live your life by committee. They don’t get a vote. Follow your heart. I didn’t know if I’d have clients nor a gym, but when I started living a life focused helping others, a life less centered on me, an authentic life, my life changed. # hashtag#vawomensbizcon hashtag#dreambig hashtag#inspiration hashtag#community hashtag#motivation

Brunswick, MD Honorary Parade Marshall |
November 2019 - A patriotic small town that captured my heart today - The City of Brunswick, MD OMG... what an amazing experience honoring our vets, but also being honored by Brunswick as a vet as an honorary marshall in the Brunswick Veterans Day Parade - they yelled my name from the sidelines, they applauded for me... I felt the love.
I came to honor the warriors in this town and I did. Thank you for your love and patriotism. I'll be back next year! |
Visiting Hospitalized Vets at Martinsburg VA Medical Center
November 2019 - Went to Martinsburg VA Medical Center to honor our vets whom have sacrificed so much for our country. Thanks to Stephen Hood for coordinating. If I didn’t understand the full impact of spreading joy, today I did. Many are in long term care with no family members close by to visit them regularly. They were so happy to see us. They shared stories of service, a hug and a smile. The MVAMC staff and volunteers do an extraordinary job of respecting and caring for our vets. I witnessed it firsthand. After today, I’m even more committed to honoring our vets - the only thing it costs me is TIME - they have/are giving so much more.
Iconic National Cathedral
November 2019 - Over the course of my reign as your Mrs USA - Transcontinental, I want to share our America through my eyes. I visited the iconic Washington National Cathedral. First stone laid in 1907 and completed in 1990. It was funded purely by donations. It has been the place for memorial and funeral services for US presidents since the 1930. It’s the 2nd largest church in the US. My tour was amazing to envision the manpower it took to build. There are nine chapels within the church. I always thought it was a Catholic Church, but it is Episcopal. There is so much American history there it is riveting. — at Washington National Cathedral.

Guest Speak to Ovarian Cancer Survivors
September 2019 - Thanks to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Washington DC Chapter, I spoke to a group of women in treatment, those whom are surviving ovarian cancer and their caretakers about how cancer changed the decisionmaking [forever] in my life. I am a 4x cancer survivor -- from diagnosis to my 4th occurrence, I shifted how I lived my life: Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis #1 - Don't just accept what is given. Question everything. EVERYTHING. Reoccurrence #2 - Stop living how others want or expect you to live. Live life authentically and to the fullest since your expiration date is unknown. Reoccurrence #3 - Your body will do what the mind commands. Fight for your life like it is your job - LITERALLY. Reoccurrence #4 - Help to inspire and motivate others to change because you are HERE, you CAN, you WILL. Simple message, but cancer helped me to remove the mask of societal expectations, self doubt and worry. I have nothing to lose, but days. I am worth more. You are worth more. We are worth more!

OneSparrow Lip Synch Battle
September 2019 - I stepped way [WAY] outside my comfort zone and competed in the One Sparrow Lip Synch Battle. I must admit it was so fun and I learned so much about myself. What did I learn? I am capable of doing anything I set my mind to. I may not be THE BEST, but I am MY BEST.
August 2019 - Lucky me, my story was included in my inspirational fitness friend's feature on yesterday's Great Day Live, WHAS11 News in Louisville, Kentucky as part of the, Age is Irrelevant podcast that highlights women in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond whom are changing how others view aging. Age is Irrelevant was created by Helen Fritsch. I aspire to be like Helen when I'm 62. She motivates me daily. Her message (similar to mine) don't limit yourself based on your age alone - live boldly - do you.

May 2019 - Had the distinct honor to be a recognized business leader in my community. May 2019 - Celebrated World Ovarian Cancer Day with teal warrior LeAnn Moreland and our community. As a 4x ovarian cancer survivor, I understand the importance of this day and creating awareness. Mayor Kelly Burk took a bold move to create awareness about Ovarian Cancer by changing the parking structure to a shade of teal to commemorate this special day.Ovarian Cancer is the 5th most common cause of female deaths. Unfortunately, most people don't even know about ovarian cancer. It often goes undetected and gets misdiagnosed because it is has no definitive symptoms.

May 2019 - Spoke to a group of 6th-12th graders about dreaming big, how it is important to continually evolve in life as your beginning point does not necessary dictate your ending point, success is not magic it takes E.F.F.O.R.T. and never give up and keep moving forward not matter how bleak things may be (today).

March 2019 - The small town spirit shone bright Saturday night at the Mrs. Virginia America pageant when local, Libby Westphal, represented Leesburg at the state level national pageant at the Colonial Theater, South Hill, VA.
According to Leesburg resident, Amy Bobchek , “My 87 year old mother hopped on a bus with 14 of her friends from the senior center in Leesburg to cheer Libby on at her competition in South Hill. She and her friends just love Libby!” This speaks volumes to Westphal’s passion to serve others in our community. But wait, nearly 40 additional Loudoun County residents traveled 3+ hours to cheer and support their hometown queen and hundreds of residents tuned in via Facebook Live to watch Libby’s fate. Westphal, a recognized local business owner, cancer survivor and Air Force veteran, took on the challenge to do her first pageant at 50 years old. “For me, my Mrs. Leesburg reign was about community service and proving you can do anything at any age. Pageant day was the ending formality.” says Westphal. Even as a novice, Westphal edged out women 20 years her junior and is now a part of the Mrs. Virginia America top six. Congratulations Libby. October 2018 - Girl Scouts Learn Importance of Health
I hosted Girl Scout Troops 346 and 1550. My message: be better (knowing you have the ability to change despite challenges - cancer, being overweight and having naysayers is not a reason to stop), be a leader not a follower (lead with your heart not clicks of friends) and the importance of exercise (moving more/less screen time), eating healthy and recharging our body (like your e-device - sleep is where all the magic happens). They got to exercise too and earned their fitness patch! Thank you, Beth Burner Barts for allowing me to share my story and 110 FIT.

Business Leader, Fitness Competitor to Competing for Mrs Virginia Competition
May 2018 - What does a local business owner, cancer survivor, 50-year-old military vet, and Mrs. Leesburg have in common? In this case it is the same person – Libby Westphal.
I am now the first Mrs. Leesburg. I was chosen by the Mrs. Virginia America organization to be a delegate from a field of applicants received from throughout the area. Next year, April 2019, I compete for the title of Mrs. Virginia America. I am a born and raised Virginian and a Leesburg area resident since 2005, it is an honor to represent MY small town in this capacity.
Early 2018, Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk awarded me two Town of Leesburg Proclamations for being a business leader in the community. The spirit of the Mrs. America platform is volunteerism and giving back. Outside of running my gym, 110 FIT, and keeping my community fit, civic involvement is commonplace for me. For our school system, my reach has spanned to 20 schools, 1000s of children/families. As special guest, I meet elementary students to impart the importance of fitness, movement and eating well - sharing how I personally beat cancer battle, overcame being overweight, became a fitness competitor, was featured in magazines and ultimately changed careers at 45 years old to become a certified personal trainer and then build and operate a fitness studio. For the high schools, I share similarly with the Future Business Leaders of America and Jobs for the Day programs.
As military veteran, with passion to support our wounded soldiers, I volunteer at Boulder Crest, an organization dedicated to improving the physical, emotional wellbeing of military/first responders. I was chosen by Boulder Crest to speak with Gold Star children where I shared how against adversity and life’s challenges how I “rose up” and changed my life and how likewise they could chart their own paths by being leaders in their own lives. I also volunteer to spend time and feed the wounded and family at Boulder Crest. I support the Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) who provides golf programs to wounded war vets. I help raise money to support the organization during tournaments.
My charter is to be a beacon of hope, inspiration and share an example of possibilities, improvement, empowerment and growth at any age.” My life has not been without challenge – 4x cancer survivor enduring months of IV chemo and having nearly a dozen surgeries, and having fought to maintain a 70lb weight loss since 2013 where I got national recognition in Shape magazine. The Mrs. Leesburg title comes on the tail of my turning 50 years old and having successful fitness competing season where I finished in the top 3 of the categories I competed.
Being Mrs. Leesburg gives me the rare opportunity to introduce our small, wonderful community to the world.
Secures Top 3 at Fitness Shows at 50 Years Old
May 2018 - When I compete for the first time in 2013, I competed to competing until I turned 50 years old. In January 2018, I embarked on competition prep that led myself for the first time. For 5 months, I exercised, reduced body fat and morphed and changed my body to get stage ready. My greatest accomplishment is not trophies, but the fact that I was skilled enough to handled both my training and my nutrition to yield a successful outcome.
In the past I had competed under NPC and this time around I switched to OCB a natural, polygraphed and drug test building federation. Completing my 6th and 7th shows, I finished on top and I couldn't be more proud. |
Recognized as Business Leader in Hometown
March 2018 - Privileged to be acknowledge as a business leader in my hometown, Leesburg, VA. I received two proclamations from the Mayor and the Town Council for my commitment to business and our community.
Launched FREE 30 Minute Workout Via Facebook Live
March 2017 - My charter is to introduce opportunities for improvement in health. It requires no equipment. It can be done at anytime. So there are no excuses. I broadcast live most Tuesday nights at 8:30pm on Facebook.

Sharing Fitness & Health in My Community
March 2017 - No better feeling than sharing the benefits of movement, eating well and sleeping move than doing it in my own community. Had the honor to kick off the 3rd Grad Health Expo at the Round Hill ES and also deliver fitness classes with other elementary schools.
For my visit to Round Hill ES -- mission accomplished. They listened and thought it was important enough to write down to make sure they remembered. My message was simple. Move more. Less screen time - more team time where they interact with each other. Fuel the body with lean meat, veggies, fruit and hydrate - eat less crap. And, lastly, recharge and restore the body with more sleep the way we recharge our beloved devices. If you keep it simple. They will listen, relate and take action. This attentive group was engaged and asked lots of great questions. |
Competed in First Obstacle Race
|
May 2016 - For the record, I am not a fan of obstacle races. Having spent 12 years of my life as part of the military, I think these races are "child's play"... A bit of joking, but truthfully that's why I've stayed away from them. I encountered with trudging through mud usually involved someone yelling at me = no fun.
I signed up for the Warrior Dash with a small group from my studio and I must admit it was fun. I finished in under 1 hr. ll |

Introducing Good Health at Local Schools
|
November 2015 - May 2016 - Our youth has a lot of unbridled energy, but I had to opportunity to focus some of the high energy on fitness and health at a local elementary school. I first shared how I was once overweight and how I had to change to become healthier and how eating well and movement was the key to my transformation. I got them moving fast by using a large 110 FIT mascot covered with junk food -- they had to help the mascot get smaller by removing the junk food. The remainder of the time was spent EXERCISING -- doing partner exercises that kept them moving and grooving for a full hour.
It was a fun filled hour! |

My Afternoon With Girl Scout Troop 6752
March 2015 - Nothing gives me more personal fulfillment than sharing my love of getting healthy, fit and my “against the odds” transformation, but sharing my story and new fitness studio, 110 FIT, with Girl Scout Troop 6752 was especially fun.
Their energy and excitement of being in my studio transcended anything I had imagined. They were curious and eager to dig in and start exercising immediately, but that was after the loud gasps and stares of disbelief when I shared my before and after photos and some of my struggles with my weight, self image and my personal movement to improve ME and now my mission to work to help others create their own successes with health and fitness at 110 FIT. My message:

During
their visit, we talked, we laughed, we exercised using the battle ropes, rowing
machines, spin bikes and had a fun Zumba session. We wrapped with the
healthiest vanilla cupcakes known to mankind. Thank you Troop 6752 for
sharing your afternoon with me and 110 FIT. Come back again soon....

Afternoon at Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness
October 2014 - I had the honor to share in a partnership where Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness hosted Gold Star Teen Adventures. The two organizations came together to provide a unique healing experience at Boulder Crest for a group of teenage girls
whom are the children of fallen United States military special operations service members that lost parent(s) in the line of duty. I participated as a motivational speaker where I spoke about “Owning Your Own Outcome” at a proper “English Tea” with the girls ranging from 8 to 17 years old at the estate of Julie and Ken Falke whom are the founders of Boulder Crest. I shared my old fashioned upbringing in Rappahannock County not far from the Bluemont estate. Farm life and having a “real” old school father that was born in the 1920s. An upbringing grounded in basic mainstays: being honest, be willing to work hard, believe in something, and being a contributor to society. I did not love these ideals as a teenage girl, but as basic as they seem, my old school father was right. I am living proof [no matter your background] if you live a life grounded in solid ethics, are willing to put in the work that most people aren’t [let’s be honest our society is getting lazier and lazier by the day because of technology], and contribute to society in some way [help people and don’t expect society to take care of you], you WILL have the opportunity to rise to the top. |
With our youth being guided toward unrealistic perfectionism and influenced by social media and mounting peer and parental pressures and body image issues, I shared my tenants for being the best you and owning YOUR outcome:
Be the Best YOU possible / Own YOU. Accept imperfection as part of your perfect design. Don’t constantly compare yourself to others - you will always come up short. What you put in is what you get out. Put in the work to achieve YOUR dream. It is not magic. Small steps can make a huge difference as building blocks to larger goals. Don’t wait to become better. Insist on improving for yourself enspite of yourself because you deserve it. Keep reading, Keep learning, keep challenging yourself. Strive for consistent improvement. Don’t put yourself in a box. Our society clamors to fit in to “something”… Don’t! Be an individual. Don’t travel in a pack. Solo time leads to self-discovery and growth -- too much “togetherness” can hinder it. Be willing to be a leader and take charge. Be a rule follower, but not a follower. If you are a follower, you are following someone else's dream. Create and follow your own. If you fall / get up – learn the lesson and move on. Don't be afraid to fail. |

110% FIT is Born - First Studio Opens in Ashburn, VA
September 2014 - People came asking for help. I gave them advice from the “school of hard knocks”… They kept coming, they kept asking, they formed a line, they waited patiently while I got certified and I was blessed to start training and changing peoples’ lives immediately. I was also blessed enough to train out of two different studios from the beginning. Where owners, Brian Wright of BW-Personal Training and Sema Konur of More Than Cheer entrusted me (a complete stranger) with their baby [their studios, their expensive equipment, the keys to their kingdom] to do as I pleased to build my business. I have been fortunate and am immensely thankful for the opportunities given to me by my both Brian and Sema and my clients whom entrust me with their health. I do/did not take this for granted.
Proudly, this week I opened the doors to my very own fitness studio to breathe life into 110% FIT. www.110FIT.com. |

Shocked at Masters Nationals!
July 2014 - I qualified for and competed in Masters Nationals bodybuilding competition in Pittsburgh, PA. To my utter surprise, I got a second call-out and placed 7th in the Over 45 Class C (tall) category. This is a highly competitive show with competitors from all over the United States that have placed in the Top 5 in regional shows. There were 1,200 competitors. I worked hard to showcase the best me. Honestly, I went in thinking I wouldn't get noticed not because I hadn't done my work, but rather being new to this sport and the vastness of the show. I figured making it to nationals was a once in a life time experience for this 46 year old Mommy so go for it, having nothing to lose, lots of experience to gain and I wanted to enjoy the experience. Boy, was it a great experience.
While I wasn't in the Top 5, I am extremely proud to be a National Top 10 NPC Competitor and even more proud of the fact that I executed my own training. That's called growth!
I am immensely thankful to my competition coach, Michelle Johnson of TeamKnockouts for her guidance on every aspect of competiting. I am happy and blessed for the opportunities this sport has brought me. Dream big!

myVisit to the Wendy Williams Show - "How You Doin?"
March 2014 - Now that was FUUUUUNNNN.... being in the audience on the Wendy Williams Show was like going to a partay with a DJ and all. Wendy is prettier, smaller, more meek and feminine in person. She was very approachable and nice, but she could not take a step without her security within a 2' radius of her. I loved her!
myHonor to Meet Celebrity Fitness Icon, Jillian Michaels
March 2014 - I was honored to be able to go to see, meet and talk with Jillian Michaels. She's the real deal. Her talk was motivating and inspirational. Jillian talked candidly about empowering oneself to make that change toward a healthier lifestyle without regret or permission. She shared the formula she uses with her clients to ensure they are lose weight exercising by making sure they are exercising at the 85% of their MHR, giving a calorie count that will ensure weight loss and eating healthy 80% of the time (it is ok to enjoy treats the other 20%).
At the end of the show, I shared my weight loss journey with her and how I used her DVDs when I started because I was fearful of the gym. I did her DVDs in the comfort of my home and I fell in love with her workout style, her tough love approach. Her workouts were the catalyst for my “maximize my workout” mindset and introduction to weights for me. I was happy to be able to share with Jillian how she was integral to my transformation.

myQuest Fulfilled - Libby Westphal, NASM-CPT & Fitness Website Launched
January 2014 - Going back to school is hard as an adult and I think it is fair to say it is even harder when you are in your 40s. I set out on the quest to become a Certified Personal Trainer so that I could help people the way I have been helped along my transformation journey. I had no idea what I was getting into when I selected the National Academy of Sport Science's CPT program. It was very difficult. I felt like I was getting a nursing degree. Even with the challenges and knowing the stats that less than 50% of CPT candidates pass NASM's exam the first, I stuck with it and I learned the information inside and out. I am extremely proud that I passed first time around and am now one NASM's newest certified personal trainers and my Libby Westphal Fitness website has been official launched. Check it out at www.110FIT.com. This is proof that is is never too late in life to pursue a dream and that anything is possible! Boy, do I feel blessed. :-)

Feature - Black Women Do Workout - "This is About Longevity"
November 2013 - As an African American, my personal genetics (like many other Blacks) are made up of all of the top "killers" - cancer, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.
I am happy to share what I have overcome with Black Women Do Workout (BWDW). I am utterly overwhelmed by the love and the responsiveness I have received. In less then 24hrs, my feature on their Facebook page received over 3,000 likes and over 300 shares which means I have touched more lives.
For me, I've won the "war" with cancer, but as an aging Black woman, I fight DAILY the battle to ward off what I am genetically predestined for. I will not sit on the sidelines in my own life and I'm happy to be a beacon of hope, to help and cheer on others!
